More than 5,000 birds have died with about 4,000 destroyed following the outbreak of Bird Flu in parts of the country. So far Greater Accra, Central and Volta Regions have recorded cases.
For now, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, MOFA has placed a ban on the importation of Poultry and Poultry products from neighboring countries where the disease is confirmed.
The Ministry has also halted the movement of Poultry and Poultry Products within and from affected regions and districts to other parts of the country.
Furthermore, Officials have initiated strict inspection with issuance of permits to cover the movement of all poultry and poultry products from unaffected parts of the country.
Director, Veterinary Services Directorate of MOFA, Dr. Patrick Abakeh, in an interview with GBC NEWS allayed fears, saying there is much sensitization to contain the disease to prevent escalation.
Again surveillance has been intensified in farms, markets and communities to ensure that the disease does not spread to other regions.
Dr. Abakeh noted that people who may have consumed poultry and are experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever and sore throat should quickly report to the nearest health centre.
The public is also advised to report any unusual death of domestic poultry and wild birds to the nearest Veterinary office and public authorities.
