A 70-year-old man on the night of Thursday, 17 February 2022, committed suicide by leaping into a well that administers as a basis of drinking water for the inhabitants of Kurantumi in the Abuakwa municipality of the Eastern Region.
According to a witness summary, the late Kojo Owusu, who was assumed to be a retired payee, ended his life at approximately 10 PM.
The Director of the Abuakwa Municipal arm of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Samuel Owusu Osei, notified Accra 100.5FM’s news on Friday, 18 February 2022 that detailed analyses point to suicide.
He clarified that he had a late-night anxiety call about the event. Mr. Osei said when the NADMO squad arrived at the scene, they recognized that the pit was full to the verge.
“We had to mobilize officers from the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI) and Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to have the water pumped out”, he recounted.
He announced after draining the water out, the corpse of the late Kojo Owusu was found beneath the well.
By his explanation, a young lady, who was attempting to lay her baby to rest at the time, informed the officials at the scene that she saw the late pensioner trembling around the well and when she asked of his purpose there, the old man implored her to mind her own business.
The lady he remarked, said she walked away barely to watch the man jump into the well. She said she couldn’t believe what had happened.
