La Liga: Real Madrid beats Alaves to move 7-point clear

Real Madrid overcame struggling Alaves to extend their lead in La Liga to seven points.

In the first half, Carlo Ancelotti’s team struggled to produce any clear-cut chances, but Marco Asensio’s looping goal broke the deadlock on 63 minutes.

For much of the game, the home fans were enraged, but Vinicius Jr scored a second goal from close range after a slick team move.

Real’s third goal came from striker Karim Benzema, who converted an injury-time penalty.

Alaves could have grabbed the lead after Pere Pons around Thibaut Courtois, but his shot went wide and the goal remained vacant.

If the substitute had taken the chance just minutes after coming on, it would have infuriated a tense Bernabeu crowd even more.

Following a terrible first half, the home fans booed loudly as the players walked off the field at halftime.

When Asensio curled home the game’s first goal, the Spaniard placed his finger to his lips, imploring the audience to cheer the players instead of jeering them.

After Fernando Pacheco saved a low drive from Vinicius Jr, and Benzema’s follow-up was cleared off the line, the Brazilian striker completed a wonderful passing play for the second goal in the 80th minute.

After Rodrygo was tripped inside the area, Benzema scuffed a shot against the post but scored from the penalty late on.

Alaves, however, had chances of their own, but Jason blasted over from the middle of the area, and Luis Rioja struck Courtois right in the face.

Real’s Champions League last-16 first-leg encounter against Paris St-Germain was lost on Tuesday, and their lead at the top would be sliced to four points if Sevilla defeats Espanyol on Sunday.
