Chelsea beat Crystal Palace in their return to Premier League play, thanks to a last-minute winner from Hakim Ziyech.
Thomas Tuchel’s team last played in the Premier League over a month ago, defeating Tottenham, and have had a week off since winning the Club World Cup on Saturday.
They appeared to be thwarted by their hosts, but Ziyech sprang up at the back post to volley in Marcos Alonso’s cross with a wonderful volley.
Moroccan Ziyech had swiped home a rebound following a stop by Jack Butland earlier in the second half, but VAR ruled Romelu Lukaku offside.
Vicente Guaita had made excellent stops from N’Golo Kante’s attempt and Antonio Rudiger’s long-range thunderbolt in the first half before being replaced at half-time due to a knee injury.
Meanwhile, the hosts failed to register a single shot on target during the game, with both Michael Oliseh and Wilfried Zaha failing to find Edouard Mendy from promising positions.
