Five key stats ahead of Real Madrid vs Barcelona

After having lost the two El Clasico meetings in the ongoing campaign, Barcelona will be gunning for revenge when they clash against their arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu later tonight.

The Blaugrana are in a good moment heading into this monumental clash and need all three points to stay in touch with third-placed Atletico Madrid, who defeated Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

But it might be easier said than done against a team that is gunning for the La Liga title and has a formidable record at home, while Barça’s own record against Real Madrid in recent times does not generate a lot of inspiration.

Ahead of this crucial encounter for Xavi & co., let’s take a look at some important stats that could have a bearing on the final outcome.

1. Barcelona’s last win in El Clasico was way back in March 2019. Ivan Rakitic scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at the Bernabeu. Since then Barça have managed one draw and five consecutive defeats.

2. With Lionel Messi having departed, Barcelona will miss their biggest weapon in El Clasico. Indeed, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner holds the all-time record of most goals and most assists delivered in the history of the Bernabeu Clasicos (15 goals, 9 assists).

3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could hold the key for Barça against Real Madrid on Sunday. The Gabonese striker has the best goals/game ratio (0.833) in La Liga this term after Karim Benzema (0.88).

4. However, Aubameyang is yet to win a single game at the Bernabeu, having failed to come out on top in his three previous visits (D1 L2). But he has scored three goals in those games, which acts as a source of encouragement for Barcelona.

5. In the 21st century, there have been nine occasions when a team has won an El Clasico encounter by a margin of three goals or more. Eight of those victories have been registered by Barcelona while Real Madrid have picked up just one such win.
