Ukraine’s President Zelensky has warned that failure to reach an agreement with Russia could result in a “Third World War.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday that if talks with Russia fail, the world could be on the verge of World War III.

“I’m ready to talk to him [Russian President Vladimir Putin].” I had been preparing for the last two years. And I believe that without negotiations, we will not be able to end this war,” Zelensky said over the weekend. “I believe that we must use any format, any opportunity, to have the possibility of negotiating with Putin.” However, if these efforts fail, it will mean that we are in the midst of a third World War.”

Russia has been invading Ukraine under the guise of a “special military operation” for nearly a month. Representatives from both sides have been involved in peace talks in recent weeks, but no agreement has been reached. As the war continues, Zelensky claims his country is “losing people daily, innocent people on the ground,” in addition to the 6.5 million people displaced within Ukraine, according to the UN.

According to Zelensky, if Ukraine had been a NATO member, “the war would not have started.” The NATO-Ukraine Commission was established in 1997 to collaborate on a variety of fronts, including security, which is one of the reasons Ukraine has received military equipment from several NATO member countries. “I’d like to receive security guarantees for my country and people,” he stated. “If NATO members are ready to accept us into the alliance, then do it right away.” Because people are dying on a daily basis.”

President Joe Biden of the United States has been attempting to thread the proverbial needle by offering assistance to Ukraine without overstepping his bounds. Putin has warned that certain meddling, such as enforcing a no-fly zone over Kyiv, as Zelensky has requested of NATO, would be interpreted as involvement in the war, escalating the ongoing conflict between the United States and Russia into something far worse.
