Tottenham Hotspur bolstered its European case with a 3-1 win over weary West Ham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, who forced Kurt Zouma into an own goal.
Spurs led 2-0 after 24 minutes but had to grit their teeth against a West Ham team that recovered from a sloppy start, no doubt influenced by the hangover from knocking Sevilla out of the Europa League on Thursday.
Said Benrahma scored at the back post off a corner kick (of course) to keep West Ham in the game for nearly an hour, but the Irons couldn’t find an equalizer, and Spurs ran away with the game late as Thursday’s toll became all too clear.
Spurs are now in fifth place with 50 points, one point ahead of sixth-place Manchester United and three points ahead of West Ham.
Tottenham has played the same number of games as Manchester United and one fewer than West Ham, but fourth-place Arsenal has three more points and a match in hand on Spurs.
