Man Utd midfielder confirms this season will be his last at Old Trafford
Man Utd midfielder Nemanja Matic has confirmed that he will leave the Premier League club at the end of the season.
The Serbian was signed from Chelsea in 2017 for £40m, as per Transfermarkt, and has made 183 appearances for the Red Devils.
He signed a two-year extension in 2020 with the option for an extra year, an option that he is not planning to take up.
Matic has made 26 appearances this season but the club announced on Instagram that 2021/22 will be his last campaign at the club.
“After a great deal of thought, I have decided that this season will be my last with Manchester United. I have informed the board, the manager and the players of my decision,” Matic said.
“It has been a huge honour and a privilege to play for this great club. A big thank you to the fans for their unwavering support.
“I will now give everything until the end of the season to help my teammates finish as strongly as possible.”
Matic joined the Red Devils after winning three Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one League Cup with Chelsea.
He did not win a single piece of silverware at Old Trafford, however, losing the 2018 FA Cup final against his former club and the 2021 Europa League final to Villarreal.
Man Utd are reportedly close to announcing the appointment of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as their new manager.
Ten Hag’s captain at Ajax, Dusan Tadic, is hopeful the 52-year-old will stay. The Serbian playmaker does accept that he is suited for the Premier League, however.
“I hope he stays, he is a great trainer. One of the best in the world,” Tadic said.
“He is so well informed about our opponents and always knows exactly what a game requires. Tactically he thinks two steps ahead of the opponent. You will know what to do when you are on the pitch.
“It is a pleasure to work with him. It is logical that there is interest for the trainer and players of Ajax. That will always be the case.”
