Tuchel Tells New Chelsea Owners That Abramovich’s “Huge Investment” Is “Worth It.”

Academy News: Thomas Tuchel informs new Chelsea owners of Roman Abramovich’s ‘huge investment.’
Thomas Tuchel asked Chelsea’s prospective new owners to invest in the club’s academy during his pre-match press conference before the FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace (h/t Daily Mail).

Since Roman Abramovich’s decision to sell the club, the Blues have yet to find a new owner. The resulting sanctions have had an impact on the club’s day-to-day operations, but the Blues are expected to announce their new owners by the end of this week.

The club is now expected to be owned by either the Todd Boehly/Jonathan Goldstein group or the David Blitzer/Josh Harris pairing, following the withdrawal of the controversial Ricketts family from the race to buy the West xLondon club. Stephen Pagliuca, a co-owner of Serie A club Atalanta, is also interested.

After full-time, Mason Mount and Thomas Tuchel embrace.
Tuchel has sent a clear message to whoever succeeds Abramovich regarding the importance of investing in the club’s academy. Tuchel wants Cobham to continue producing great talents, such as Reece James and Mason Mount.

Roman Abramovich

“I hope for them [the new owners], the academy is as important as it is for us and the supporters. It’s what makes any team special if you have the mix between players from abroad and players from the academy.”

Tuchel has hit the nail on the head.
The former PSG manager appreciates Russian businessman Roman Abramovich’s dedication to the academy and the women’s team. Tuchel also believes his views are shared by the Chelsea board of directors.

“Chelsea academy is a big part of this club and is a huge investment by Roman Abramovich, and the women are as well… I think there is a lot of other investment needed and I think it is worth it and I think the board will tell anybody who buys this club the same thing.”

Tuchel’s points must be understood by our new owner, who must back him and the club by investing properly in the next generation. Chelsea faces Crystal Palace today, where they may face a Cobham graduate in Guehi, but another academy talent, Conor Gallagher, will be ruled out because he is not permitted to play against his parent club.

Abraham and Guehi earned a total of £52 million after joining AS Roma and Crystal Palace, respectively, while Tomori earned a cool £25 million when he left for AC Milan last year. More importantly, fans enjoy seeing one of their homegrown talents make an impact on the senior team.

Tuchel is dead on about the importance of continuing to invest in the club’s academy. Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, and Marc Guehi, for example, have generated massive transfer funds after honing their skills in the academy before making a name for themselves on the senior stage.

An academy that produces homegrown talent for the first team can also assist the club in times of need, such as when the club was imposed a transfer ban and Frank Lampard was forced to make do with the players he had available and those playing for the development teams.
