Messi has struggled to find his best form in his first season in France since joining PSG from Barcelona last summer.
The 34-year-old has only four goals in Ligue 1 but has 13 assists for PSG, who were crowned French champions last weekend after a 1-1 draw with Lens.
Despite his struggles this season, Messi has been named the third-best performer in Europe’s top five leagues by the stats website whoscored.com.
The rankings are based on average match ratings for Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A, and Bundesliga players.
Statistics from league matches, such as goals, assists, clean sheets, pass success percentage, and man-of-the-match performances, are factored into the ratings.
Surprisingly, Messi ranks third on the list, with a 7.71 out of 10 average match rating.
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski leads the rankings with an average match rating of 7.93, followed by Messi’s PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe, who has an average match rating of 7.91.
This season, Lewandowski has 33 goals in 31 league games, while Mbappe has 22 goals in 31 league games for PSG.
With an average rating of 7.68, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, the current favorite to win the Ballon d’Or this year, is the joint-fourth on the list.
He scored twice against Manchester City on Tuesday night, bringing his season total to 41, with 25 of those coming in league play.
Benzema is tied for fourth place with Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, the highest-ranked Premier League player on the list.
Salah has a 7.68 rating after scoring 22 goals in 31 Premier League games this season.
