Joshua Lee Burgess, 35, killed Zaria, 15, after’sexually and psychologically torturing her for 22 hours’

The Monroe killer was sentenced after three hours of jury deliberations at the end of a three-week trial.

Zaria was visiting Burgess for the weekend when she was brutally murdered.

He later confessed to a sheriff’s office.

Investigators found the teen’s body at his address.

The attorney’s office called it a heinous, atrocious, and cruel killing of a child.

Everyone involved in this case was emotionally exhausted. We continue to pray for Zaria’s mother.

Burgess was convicted of first-degree murder, statutory rape, three sex offenses, and child sexual exploitation.

According to the news release, he received an additional 76 years in prison.

Sheriff Tony Underwood said, ‘It’s evil. Killing your own flesh and blood is an evil crime.’

WSOC reported Burgess’ defense attorneys wanted his admission erased.

Burgess’ trial attorney and appeal plans were unknown.

Zaria was a sophomore on Monroe High School’s dance team and marching band when she died.

Alan Sturdivant called her energetic.

Burgess will be housed at Central Prison in Raleigh until his death.

He will be executed by pentobarbital injection 15 to 120 days after sentencing.
