In the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era, Benzema emerged as Madrid’s most important player. Since the Portuguese’s departure in 2018, the Frenchman has steered the ship with match-winning goals and assists.

In the 2021-22 season, the 34-year-old was in top form, scoring 44 goals and providing 15 assists in 46 games across competitions. His outstanding performances in the Champions League (10 knockout goals and an assist) helped Madrid win their 14th European title at the season’s end. Benzema, who won the Pichichi award with 27 goals last season, has just over a year left on his contract (June 2023). Given his outstanding performances, Real Madrid cannot imagine letting him leave for free at the end of his contract. Renewal talks have thus begun, but finding a middle ground is more difficult said than done.

Benzema, who is well aware of his position in the team, is said to want a salary comparable to Ronaldo’s before leaving for Juventus in 2018. If he does not accept Real Madrid’s offer, Paris Saint-Germain could swoop in and sign the No. 9 to a new contract at the Parc des Princes. They have allegedly already made him an offer to join PSG in 2023. Los Blancos are not in a hurry to close the deal, which means more talks will take place in the coming months. The club does not want the love affair with Benzema to end bitterly, but a conflict cannot be ruled out.

Karim Benzema has established himself as Real Madrid’s highest-paid player.
With Marcelo set to leave at the end of the month, Karim Benzema will become the club’s longest-serving first-teamer. Despite his outstanding performance and longevity, he is not the highest-paid player on the team.

According to Salary Sport, Benzema is the club’s joint fourth-highest-paid player (excluding Gareth Bale, who will leave in July). Eden Hazard, David Alaba, and Toni Kroos all earn more per week than him, while Luka Modric earns the same as Benzema: €319,850. Given how well he’s performed since 2009, the former Lyon man certainly deserves a significant pay raise. It may be difficult to keep him beyond 2023 unless they offer him that.
