The BET Awards 2022 Best International Act has been awarded to Nigerian singer Tems.
In the early hours of June 27, 2022, she defeated Firebox DML and the other nominees, Dave from the UK, Dinos from France, Fally Pupa from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Little Simz from the UK, and Major League DJZ from South Africa (WAT).
The BET Awards honor Black excellence in sport, music, and culture. The Los Angeles Microsoft Theater hosted the 2022 event.
Tems had earlier won Best Collaboration at the event for Wizkid’s Essence featuring Justin Bieber.
Essence faced competition from DJ Khaled’s “Every Change I Get” featuring Lil Baby and Lil Durk, Baby Seem’s “Family Ties” featuring Kendrick Lamar, Bia’s “Whole Lotta” featuring Nicki Minaj, Drake’s “Way 2 Sexy” featuring Future and Young Thug, and Doja Cat’s “Kiss me More” featuring SZA.
Nigeria was appropriately represented at the 2022 BET Awards, when Pheelz and Firebox DML gave thrilling performances at what was dubbed as the largest night in entertainment.
Other Nigerian musicians who have won the Best International Act award include Burna Boy, 2Baba, D’banj, Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and D’banj. Burna Boy won the prize for a third time in 2021.
Tems’ career has completely turned around in a year, going from a feature on Wizkid’s “Essence,” which received a Grammy nomination, to “Fountains,” a tune off Drake’s sixth studio album, “Certified Lover Boy,” which won Best Song of the Year and Best Collaboration at the 2021 AFRIMMA awards!
