No Ghana Card, No Meter Project To Start Soon – Energy Minister

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current energy minister popularly known as Napo, has hinted that Ghanaians without Ghana Cards may soon be unable to buy energy or put electricity meters in their homes.

The law, which has not yet taken effect, is a component of the government’s plan to develop the energy sector, according to the minister.

He said: “Very soon, if you don’t have Ghana Card, you wouldn’t get a meter. Regulations are subjected to change and it is all about development”.

“It is the rules set by this country that I follow. It is the rules set by the country which states that, if you need a meter, do this or that”, the Minister explained

The new deadline for re-registering SIM cards with the Ghana card, however, has the National Identification Authority (NIA) concerned.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh spoke after a discussion about Hon. Ursula Owusu Akuful’s order to restrict SIM cards by the end of September if people don’t link their mobile SIM cards to their National IDs.
