Brian Brobbey says that he turned down a move to Manchester United because “Erik also wanted to work with me.”

Forward Brian Brobbey of Ajax has explained why he turned down a transfer to Manchester United this summer. Instead of remaining with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, the 20-year-old attacker has returned permanently to Ajax. Brobbey said he wanted to leave the Dutch powerhouses because he has “unfinished business” at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Additionally, the forward disclosed that Erik ten Hag personally reached out to him to request his services at Manchester United.

On the other hand, Brian Brobbey turned down the offer and signed with the Amsterdam club for a reported €17 million plus add-ons. Speaking with Voetbal International (via Voetbal Primeur), Brian Brobbey explained why he turned down a move to Manchester United:

“I was keen on visiting Ajax. Erik once texted me asking if I was interested in working together, and I politely declined. I yearned for a return trip.”

He elaborated by saying “Just so you know, my friends, Ajax’s playing style wasn’t quite done. To begin with, I must achieve success as a striker for Ajax 1. For the past half a year, I’ve been renting a spot here and it’s felt like that. Afterward, I knew in my gut that I needed to make a return.”

Brian Brobbey attended the prestigious Ajax youth program. However, in the summer of 2021, the Dutchman signed a free transfer to play for RB Leipzig. But in January 2022, the forward was loaned back to Ajax for another six months. When on loan to Ajax, Brobbey scored seven times in eleven games played in the Eredivise. He has also contributed to the 2022-23 season positively. The forward has played in four games for Ajax, scoring once and assisting twice.

United is still looking for a new forward.
Before the end of the summer transfer season, Manchester United is hoping to bolster their assault by signing a new attacker. Numerous forwards, such as Ajax forward Antony and PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo, have been linked to the Red Devils. Fabrizio Romano claims that the club and Antony have agreed on personal conditions for a transfer to Old Trafford.

Whether or whether Cristiano Ronaldo will remain with Manchester United is still up in the air. The Portuguese striker is eager to move but has not been able to sign with a new team. However, United’s current attacking force of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Jadon Sancho proved their worth in Monday’s 2-1 triumph over Liverpool (August 22).
