Believe me, Ursula Owusu is wrong when she says that unregistered SIM cards will cost a lot this month. — Sam George

Ursula Owusu Ekuful, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, moved the deadline for re-registering SIM cards to September 30. She also said that SIM cards that aren’t registered by August will cost more to use after that month.

At a press conference on Sunday, July 31, the Minister also said that these SIM cards would not be able to use services like voice and data.

“It will be looked at at the end of this month [July], and any SIM that has not been fully registered by the end of August will not be able to use certain services, including voice and data,” she said.

Ursula Owusu also said, “It will cost more to use SIMs that haven’t been registered.”

In response, Samuel Nartey George, the member of parliament for Ningo Prapram, has said that the Minister’s threat should not be taken seriously.

The lawmaker said in a tweet with a quote from the Minister’s speech, which Ghnewsfile saw, that it was just a threat that didn’t work.

“I can RELUCTANTLY and CONFIDENTLY say that the threat that you would have to pay more for telecoms services after today if you didn’t register your SIM card has failed,” he said.

He also said, “So, if you get the chance, go sign up for your Ghana Card and SIM card. Cheers.”
