Shakira faces eight years jail sentence for tax fraud allegations

Shakira could get up to eight years in prison if she is found guilty of tax fraud, which is why she has been told to go to court.

The 45-year-old Colombian singer is accused of not paying taxes in Spain from 2012 to 2014, and six prosecutors have persuaded a Spanish court to bring the singer to trial.

In 2021, she was accused of hiding her control of assets by using “shell” companies. She was also accused of only putting her name on forms in places that were known as “tax havens.”

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is said to have avoided paying a total of €14.5m (£13m) in taxes.

Shakira has said that all of the claims against her are false and that she has paid the government everything she owed.

She said that her fiscal residence was in the Bahamas from 2012 to 2014, so she didn’t have to pay income tax in Spain.

The singer also said she was in Spain “occasionally” during that time, but prosecutors said she was living in Barcelona for more than six months of the year.

If she is found guilty, she could go to prison for up to eight years.

Shakira’s first album came out when she was 13, and her fifth album, Laundry Service, made her famous all over the world. It had the singles “Whenever, Wherever” and “Underneath Your Clothes.”

Since then, she has sung “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official song for the 2010 World Cup, worked as a coach on two seasons of The Voice in the US, and shared the stage with Jennifer Lopez at the Super Bowl halftime show.
