Rejoice! Customers Who Lost Money Because of a Faulty Prepaid System Will Get Money Back; PURC Orders ECG Statement Issued – Read

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has told the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to pay customers who were affected by the recent system failure of the company money as compensation.

Between the end of September 2022 and the beginning of October 2022, it was hard for people who used prepaid meters from the state power distribution company to add more credit.

Customers who wanted to buy credit from third-party vending machines or through the ECG mobile app were affected by the problem. As a result, a few power users were left without power for days.

In a statement from October 4, 2022, the PURC said that ECG had broken its obligations and should pay its affected customers.

“Since the failure of the ECG prepayment meter system caused a lot of trouble, the Commission has decided that ECG will have to pay compensation to all customers who were affected.

“ECG IS HERBY ORDERED to compensate each affected customer for loss suffered as a show of responsive customer service,” the statement said.

According to the directive, the compensation is to be affected “in the form of one-time electricity credit commencing 1 October 2022 and ending October 7, 2022.”
