It is now public knowledge that the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has promised among others to “legalise and regularize” the use of motorbikes for commercial purposes, popularly known as Okada.
The reason for the legalisation and regularization of the business as given by the former president and the NDC Party is because he claims Okada is more lucrative than the Akuffo Addo’s NABCO program.
This promise has met several divergent reactions from Ghanaians. Many people have criticised the former president for giving a promise that is deadly to Ghanaians. The Okada is one means of transportation which has caused several roads accidents, resulting in deaths, amputations, destruction to properties, etc.
A number of those who have critiqued the NDC flagbearer’s message have asked him to legalise all other businesses which he considers profitable, if that is his motive for preaching the legalisation of Okada.
According to a Communications team member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Asafo Adjei, the flagbearer of the opposition NDC should not only Legalise the use of Okada, but he should also legalise prostitution as well. This is because prostitution also pays better than NABCO and many other government employments.
Speaking on Neat FM he said, “I am not against okada; it is one of the affordable means of transportation but what will you gain if you promise to legalize okada. Should we clap for you? Does legalizing it means you have purchased motorbike for those interested. Is this a policy from a former President? He has not changed nor learned his lessons…(in that case) then tell (former) President Mahama to legalize prostitution because they are more than the okada riders. legalize prostitution and let us know that you are creating jobs” he said.
After the NPP communicator’s comments on radio, the following were some of the reactions from Ghanaians on social media.
